Junior Navigation (JN) is the first in a two-part program of study in offshore navigation, followed by the Navigation course. It is designed as a practical "how to" course.
JN covers ocean plotting and celestial navigation. Students are prepared to serve as Navigator on an ocean voyage, performing a sample Newport-Bermuda cruise plan and plotting the actual changes and situations one would encounter. The final exam, a two week open book test, continues the journey at home.
This course is useful both for USCG Masters wishing to upgrade their licenses and persons wishing to learn skills useful in ocean navigation.
The course is plotting-heavy, and requires time and dedication for successful completion. Potential students who are rusty on their chart skills or unused to performing calculations on a hand held calculator should consider our Advanced Piloting course before enrolling. Students will bring to class a scientific calculator (under $10 at many stores; recommendations available at first class) and plotting tools. Erasers are essential.
